What is Allergic Conjunctivitis?

Eye allergies or allergic conjunctivitis result from a systemic disorder of the immune system.

It is a reaction to allergens such as pollen, mold, dust mites or animal hair.

These allergens provoke the release of chemicals called histamines, which in turn cause inflammation. It is this inflammation that can make your eyes:

• Red
• Swollen
• Watery
• Burning

If you have an eye allergy, you may also feel like you have sand in your eyes and eyelids. You may also experience temporarily blurred vision. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by a itchy nose and sneezing, cough or headache.

The best defense against eye allergies is to identify and avoid contact with the allergen that triggers these symptoms in you.
