What is a Cataract?

A cataract is an opacity of the lens of your eyes. Cataracts may not cause symptoms at the outset, but over time, as the opacification progressively increases, your vision may become blurred.

Some types of cataracts intensify the brightness of light, making it uncomfortable to look at bright lights.

Most cataracts are age-related (senile cataracts), being much more common in older people. It's believed that there are several other factors that increase the risk of cataracts, including exposure to UV sunlight, poor nutrition, smoking, diabetes, and family history.

If you have a cataract but don't have symptoms, or the effect on your vision is slight, treatment may not be necessary.

However, surgery may be necessary if your cataract begins to affect your daily activities, such as your ability to recognize people, read, or drive.

Only an ophthalmologist can confirm a cataract diagnosis and recommend the best treatment.
