What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes do not produce a sufficient amount of tears or when tears evaporate too quickly due to poor quality.
Dry eye syndrome can cause your vision to become blurry and your eyes to become:
- Dry
- Swollen
- Red
- Tearful
- Burning
- With a sensation of a foreign body (like sand)
Dry eye syndrome has a variety of causes. It can be a side effect of some medications or a symptom of chronic illness.
It is particularly common in elderly people.
Dry eye syndrome is a permanent condition that can usually be managed with good eye hygiene and lubricating eye drops, artificial tears. Symptoms may also be alleviated by adjusting the environment, such as using an air humidifier when the air is dry.
If you are taking medication, speak with your doctor to find out if dry eye syndrome may be a side effect and if there is any alternative medication that can alleviate this side effect. Your ophthalmologist can also recommend lubricating eye drops to relieve symptoms.

Dry and tired eyes?
If you suspect you may suffer from DRY EYE, use this quick test:
1. Fix your gaze on the image number.
2. Blink twice and start counting immediately after the second blink, reading a number per second.
3. Avoid blinking as much as possible.
4. Stop when you feel discomfort.
5. If you stopped before number 10, consult one of our vision professionals.
