What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the term given to a group of eye diseases that can affect your vision. It is most common in the elderly and those with a family history of the disease.

In Glaucoma there is a progressive damage of the optic nerve and nerve fibers in the back of the eye, usually associated with an increase in pressure inside the eyeball, intraocular pressure. It usually affects both eyes, but it may affect one eye more rapidly than the other.

It is quite common for people with glaucoma to present no symptoms and the initial vision seems normal. Thus, it is very important to have regular eye exams, so that your ophthalmologist can assess glaucoma in its earliest stage.

If untreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss. The eye injury caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, but early diagnosis and proper treatment can minimize future vision loss.

Only a qualified medical professional can inform about the causes, diagnosis and the best treatment for your case.
