What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common and permanent condition that causes inflammation of the eyelid edges.

It is most often caused by an infection or skin disease. It can also lead to dry eye syndrome.

Blepharitis causes your eyelids to swell, turn red, and itch, which can make your eyes hurt.

Your eyelids can also become oily, which can cause a sensation of sand or a foreign body in the eyes. Blepharitis can also lead to abnormal eyelash growth or loss of eyelashes.

If you've had blepharitis, it's likely to recur sporadically. Blepharitis flare-ups are controlled with topical treatments and good eye hygiene. In some cases, oral antibiotics may be required.

Your ophthalmologist is the appropriate professional to diagnose and treat blepharitis, controlling its symptoms.
