How to protect your eyes against the sun and UV rays?

You probably use sunscreen to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays, but your eyes also need protection from the sun!

Ultraviolet rays (UV) are part of the spectrum of light that reaches the earth from the sun. Some studies suggest that these rays can be harmful to the eyes as we grow older, stimulating the progression of eye diseases.

Exposure to the sun can also cause or worsen other changes in the eyes, such as cataracts and pterigium. Good eye protection against UV rays is very important.

Follow the advice below to protect your eyes against the sun and to help keep your eyes and vision as healthy as possible.

Choose your sunglasses intelligently

Sunglasses labeled as UV400 offer the best protection, because they block even the UV rays with the smallest wavelength. Choose larger lenses and a wider style to protect as much of your eyes as possible. Choose the ideal glasses for you in our store!

Use contact lenses that block UV rays

Even good quality sunglasses let in the sun around their edge. UV-blocking contact lenses filter the rays that hit the cornea and the lens, providing additional protection.

There are already on the market contact lenses made with UV blocking filters built into the lenses to help protect your eyes from the transmission of harmful sun rays.

Wear a hat

A wide-brimmed hat will provide additional protection for your eyes. It will also help protect your face and chest from sun damage and prevent sunburn.

Beware of reflected light

Light reflected on sand, snow or water intensifies exposure to the sun. Make a special effort to protect your eyes if you are on the beach, skiing, near the water or at high altitudes.

Watch the time of day

The sun is strongest between 10 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. However, research shows that your eyes are at greater risk of sun damage during the mid-morning and late afternoon. Try to protect your eyes at all times throughout the day.

Regardless of the weather

Many of us take precautions to protect our eyes on sunny days, but UV rays can also harm our eyes on cloudy days. So it's important to protect our eyes from UV exposure at any time of the year and regardless of the weather.

Ask your ophthalmologist

Consult your ophthalmologist regularly. During your appointment, ask your ophthalmologist for other advice on how to protect your eyes from the sun.

Take care of children

Most injuries occur in childhood. Remember to protect your children's eyes with wide sunglasses that block UV rays and a hat.

The harmful UV rays from the sun can be as dangerous to your eyes as to your skin.
